Check out the opportunities and routes you can take to help develop your career

Developing your career prospects does not necessarily have to mean moving up the ladder or staying still. Career development is about owning and growing your potential, playing to your strengths, getting exposure to new skills and trying out new things if you decide they’re right for you.
This page will take you through the many opportunities and routes you can take to help develop your career if you’d like to. From apprenticeships and professional development, our in house training academy, courses to top tips and guidance on having meaningful conversations about your career. You’ll also hear from a range of team members about their own experiences of developing their careers.
Ultimately it’s your career, you're in the driving seat and we’re here to support you on your journey.

Apprenticeships
We’re passionate about growing our talent pool through professional apprenticeships and helping our people meet their career goals with programmes that are tailored to their development needs. We are proud to be supporting a number of employees currently working through apprenticeship programmes. Apprentices complete their professional qualification by applying their skills in the workplace. They have an opportunity to spend time with different functions within the organisation to broaden their knowledge and skills.
Branching out at work
If it’s your goal to transition one day to another area of the society or you would just like to gain more information, a good way to explore this is by spending some time with a colleague from that function. They will be able to help you gain insight into a range of roles and help you understand the sorts of things you could do to tailor your development in the right direction.
Branch network induction
This is a tailored programme designed to provide the skills required to service all of our members needs in our branch network. We provide workshop based training as well as local support back in branch to help deliver our all under one roof proposition. We are advocates for internal development and the branch network has lots of scope for exactly that.
Coaching and mentoring
People leaders can use coaching skills in order to help their team members identify their goals and the resources necessary in order to achieve them. Our Talent and Development team can also offer bespoke coaching interventions in particular circumstances. Mentoring is development driven. Its purpose is to develop you, not only for the current job, but also for the future. This distinction differentiates the role of your immediate manager and that of the mentor.
Young Enterprise

For many of us, the memories of school are filled with fondness and we all remember that exceptional teacher or mentor that stood out. You could develop valuable management skills as a Business Adviser with our charity partner Young Enterprise. Each September, we offer you the chance to help that next generation build their business skills by taking part in some volunteering.
Leadership training
Regardless of level, we are committed to supporting, challenging and nurturing our different populations of leaders and aspiring leaders. There are a wide variety of routes we can use to create a varied and supportive learning experience - on the job, workshops, coaching and mentoring or formal training.

Professional qualifications
As part of this commitment, we are pleased to support team members who have a desire to pursue certain professional qualifications. The objective of the professional qualifications policy is to ensure consistency and fairness in the process. If your current role or progression opportunity requires you to hold a professional qualification, it is possible that we can support you to achieve this.
