Summer selections for SportsAid athletics stars
Summer is finally (officially) here and for several of our SportsAid stars, it will be one to remember.
Hurdler Alicia Barrett has not only broken two age-group records but made her senior international debut and qualified for this year’s Junior European Championships in Grosetto, Italy!
Speaking on her record-breaking 100m performance at Bedford earlier this month the 19-year-old from Chesterfield said: “I am extremely pleased and happy with the result from the weekend. I have been working towards this over the last few years and due to the support from The Nottingham and SportsAid, have been able to gain the right experience and training to help me.”
Following on from her senior debut at Lille last weekend in which she came an impressive fifth, Alicia will be representing Great Britain in Italy in July joined by:
- Jess Turner (400mh) from Denby
- Joel Leon Benitez (Pole Vault) from Stapleford
- Hannah Williams (400m) from Welwyn Garden City
Jess will also be part of the British U23’s team headed to Poland this summer alongside Amy Griffiths (1500m) from Wigston.
Closer to home, para-sprinter Zac Shaw will be flying the flag in London at the IAAF and IPC 2017 World Championships. The 21-year-old who was supported in 2015 by Cleethorpes branch told us: “To have your country host a World Championship is something special, so to be selected to compete in it is a once in a lifetime opportunity – especially with it being at the Olympic stadium after what happened in 2012.
“I’ve worked so hard for this so it is an amazing feeling, representing your country is the pinnacle of anyone’s sporting career.
“I want to give a big thank you to my coaches, my family and everyone who has been supporting me, because it is a team effort to get here.”
