Suzanne works in the marketing team looking after our sponsorship activity with partners Leicester Tigers and The Nottingham Panthers, managing events and marketing.
When I was in school I always wanted to be on the television, either as an actress or a children’s TV presenter! I left school with six GCSEs. My favourite lesson at school was integrated humanities but I did well in maths, English, RE, science and word processing.
I soon realised throughout the latter part of my school years that my TV ambitions were never going to happen so started to focus working in the retail sector in the nearest city to where I lived (I lived in a very quiet village).
My first job was working for the clothes company United Colours of Benetton. I literally went into the shop on a Saturday to buy some clothes with my birthday money and there was a sign in the window for staff. I had my interview there and then…and started a week later. How things have changed now!
I stayed within the retail sector whilst I lived in Chester, finishing my time in Chester running a Mexican restaurant, then I moved to Nottingham 21 years ago. My work history has varied here in Nottingham – started working at Capital One, then for The Environment Agency, then I ended up in the hospitality industry running bars and restaurants.
I joined The Nottingham on a temporary assignment in the HR department. Whilst I was there I met a lady from marketing in the on-site café and she told me that that there was a position coming available in the sponsorship department and that I should go for the job. Five years on and here I am…
I think I have progressed really well and learnt a lot more about the business, the financial sector, our partnerships and much more. I manage both of our sporting partnerships, Leicester Tigers and Nottingham Panthers, and I love it. I work closely with our partners, designing and delivering the sponsorship plan across the extended heartland, maximising all opportunities to promote our brand and interact with our community. I also look at the annual activation plan, looking at ways to attract potential new members through the use of our assets and raising the profile of our products and services.
I really enjoy my job and my advice for someone looking to start a new career is to make sure it is something that you really want to do. We spend so much of our time working, your work environment needs to keep you interested, keep you learning and it needs to be fun. Also make sure that there is room for development in your role.
