Super Steve named unsung hero of football
Inspirational Steve Tur’s goal has always been to put smiles on the faces of footie-mad local youngsters – just one of the many reasons why he’s been named our first ‘Unsung Football Hero
Steve, from Newark, has landed a football signed by the Nottingham Forest first team squad and a VIP trip to the City Ground for himself and three friends courtesy of The Nottingham after the society heard all about his passion and dedication in coaching junior side Winthorpe and Coddington Tigers FC.
The 55-year-old has been involved with the set-up for 13 years, coaching over 50 youngsters during that time. But Steve landed the unsung hero honour - set up by The Nottingham to celebrate its 10th year of being in partnership with Nottingham Forest via the Nottingham Forest Saver account - for being so much more than just a coach.
Writing in his nomination, Winthorpe and Coddington Tigers committee member Steve Hanstock said: “Steve is rare. Most coaches tend to stick at it for the duration that their son or daughter plays for the team they happen to coach. But not Steve. His tireless effort is for other children, not his own.
“Steve cuts the football fields, sets up the respect barriers for all teams, helps with refereeing when needed, acts as a taxi for his team on training and match days, helps clean the clubhouse, writes match reports every Saturday afternoon and spends more time than anyone planning and executing brilliant training sessions, week after week. He also organises non-football related team events.
“His commitment is genuinely second to no-one else. Steve helps not just turn the youngsters into decent players but also into decent young men and women.”
A modest and unassuming man, Steve added: “When I heard I had won this award I was shocked. I have loved every minute of being with the club and all I’ve ever done is my best, without it ever being for any gain. It’s the youngsters who make it such a worthwhile and rewarding role.
“It’s extremely apt to win Nottingham Forest related prizes as we (Winthorpe and Coddington Tigers) recently took a group of players to the City Ground to watch a match and see first-hand the tactics and techniques of professional players.
“Thank you to Steve for the nomination, to everyone at the club for their support and also to The Nottingham for selecting me for this honour and for showing they are an organisation that cares about local people.”
