Fraud prevention: It's time to Take Five

In 2018 across the UK criminals successfully stole £1.2 billion through scams. These crimes can have a devastating impact on victims. Even if the victim gets their money back from their finance provider, the organised criminal gangs which perpetrate these frauds still profit from the proceeds. This money may go on to fund illicit acts which damage our society – crimes such as terrorism, drug trafficking and people smuggling.

However due to investment in advanced security systems, the banks and building societies also prevented £1.6 billion in fraud attempts in 2018. We work hard to protect our members from fraud and the millions of pounds of losses that can come from it - not to mention the emotional stress that it can cause. But fraud is not a threat the finance industry can tackle alone. 

You might think you already know some simple rules to prevent fraud; like don’t give away your PIN number or account password, but the trouble is under pressure when you’ve been caught off guard and unprepared it can be difficult to think. After all, trusting people on their word is something everyone tends to do instinctively. If someone says they’re from your building society or a trusted organisation, why wouldn’t you believe them?

What is Take Five?

Here at The Nottingham, we are supporting the Take Five campaign, led by UK Finance and backed by the Government, in order to help our members to recognise and safeguard against fraudulent activity.

Its aim is to encourage you to stop and think; why am I being asked for personal details, what do they want with my information, could this be a scam?

If you receive a request to provide personal or financial information, you need to take a moment to reflect and step back from the situation. Yes, even if they say they're from The Nottingham or another trusted organisation, you still need to take the time to stop and think about what’s really going on.

How can I detect a scam?

We at The Nottingham will never call you and request that you disclose memorable information such as personal log on details and passwords and neither will any other bank or building society. 

Listen to your instincts. Don’t assume that a call, email or message is genuine. If something sounds too good to be true, or even a bit fishy, it probably is! 

Take your time. We will never rush you for details and we won’t mind if you want to end a call and call us on a number you know and trust.

What to do if you think you've been a victim of fraud 

If you have noticed any unusual transactions on your Nottingham Building Society account, contact us straight away on 0344 481 4444. 

Our customer service team is available six days a week: 
8.00am - 7.00pm Monday - Thursday
8.00am - 6.00pm Friday
9.00am - 12.30pm Saturday
