From rental to forever home

A visit to The Nottingham’s Bulwell branch to find a rental property ultimately resulted in a couple being able to buy the family home they thought they were on the brink of losing.

Married Denise and David Bell had lived in their rented Bulwell house for 23 years when, out of the blue, the landlord announced that he was putting it up for sale.

With the prospect looming of having to move from the property that has also been home for their daughter and where their grandchildren have spent a lot of their early years, Denise was understandably emotional on meeting customer services assistant Pam Purdy.

She and David had presumed that a mortgage was out of the question, believing that with Denise being 60 and her husband five years her senior that they would be too old to be considered.

However, after a comforting cup of tea and initial fact-finding chat with Pam they were connected via video link to Nottingham Mortgage Services adviser Pippa Graves, and things started to look more positive - with the story ultimately having a very happy ending.

Denise explains: “When we arrived at the Bulwell branch that day we really didn’t know what was going to happen next - other than that very soon we were not going to be able to live in the house we had been in for over 20 years and we needed to find somewhere to rent.

“From the minute we met Pam she was an absolute diamond. We were very emotional due to the situation, so she arranged for us to have a cup of tea and a seat. Pam gave us space and time to talk about things and then asked if we had considered buying our own house.

“It hadn’t even crossed our minds as we thought mortgages were always for 25 or 30 years and that we were too old to get one. Pam said it was worth a chat with a mortgage adviser and connected us, via video link, to Pippa.

“Speaking via video conferencing was a comfortable experience, as we were talking about a hugely important matter so it was important that it was face-to-face. Pippa expertly explained we could be considered for a nine-year mortgage and that our incomings would more than cover repayments.

“She searched over 60 lenders - thousands of mortgages in fact - and found the deal that was right for us. It was such a relief when the mortgage was accepted and we knew we would soon have the green light to own our house.

“Everyone at The Nottingham bent over backwards to help us and the end result is that we are able to stay in our home and in the area where we have been all of our lives. We are very grateful for all of the support, expertise and kindness we have received.”

Denise also urged others to not take it for granted that they would be rejected for a mortgage.

She added: “Walking into the Bulwell branch that day has turned our lives around. We have gone from near despair to being able to happily live in our own home without worrying.
