Nottingham Building Society's Dereham branch

Norfolk market town Dereham is situated about 15 miles west of Norwich and 25 miles east of King’s Lynn and labels itself “The Heart of Norfolk”, due to its central location in the county. Dereham is on the A47 bypass, which runs all the way from Wisbech to Great Yarmouth and was formerly part of a railway line used as a location for the filming of Dad’s Army.

Match scores £475 for Norfolk charity

Our Thetford, Dereham and Fakenham teams tackled a fundraising football match and fun day – and raised £475 for a local charity.

Two Rockland United sides went head-to-head in the match - which ended 3-3 and had to be settled by penalties - organised by the branches and enjoyed by a sizeable crowd.

But the best result was the funds raised for Premier Foundation, a not-for-profit charity that helps disengaged young people get on track and have improved future prospects.

The money was made via fun activities and attractions such as a face painter, ice cream van, bouncy castles, cake stall, raffle and tombola.
Premier Foundation CEO Amelia Epton said: “We are indebted to The Nottingham for their hard work and passion to help us by organising what was a fantastic day.”

Schoolchildren's lesson in spending versus saving

Norfolk youngsters showed a keen interest in earning interest during one of our Money Academy sessions at a Dereham school.

Branch manager Charley McIlwhan and customer services assistant Michelle Watson visited Swanton Morley Primary to teach Year 4 pupils about spending versus saving.

There was plenty of interactive discussion around ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ when it comes to cash, with an emphasis on sensible saving for the future.

Michelle said: “Financial education is one of the key principles of our community programme. We do this on a daily basis in our branches with products and services that have advice at the core so to be able to extend that to local schools has been great.”

Food for thought… branch team support local charity

Our Dereham team decided to do something to help those less fortunate and arranged for the branch to become a donation drop-off point for the Mid Norfolk Foodbank.

Colleagues have also agreed to give up time to help the charity out through volunteering.

Branch manager Charley McIlwhan, pictured with some of the donations, said: “We’re always looking for ways to support and give back to our local community, so when we heard about the foodbank’s great work we simply had to get involved.”
