Sandwiched between the cities of Sheffield (11 miles away) to the north and Derby (24 miles) to the south, Chesterfield is a market town with strong former mining connections that can be traced back to a Roman fort built in 1st century AD. It has excellent road links via the A61 and M1 and benefits from the Chesterfield Line, which is part of the Derby to Leeds railway, begun in 1837 by George Stephenson.

Bite-sized fact: Chesterfield’s best known, and most prominent, landmark is the crooked spire of the Church of St Mary and All Saints, built in the 14th century. The spire got its unusual shape when unseasoned timber was used during its construction. Over 30 tons of lead tiles were placed on top and as the wood dried the weight of the lead twisted it.
